Participation Awards for Kids
“Everyone gets a trophy!” Has been the motto for every type of event for kids for years. The excitement in their eyes and the pride of showing off their first trophy is a moment every parent loves to see. The debates about Participation Trophies is ongoing, with strong feelings on both sides. Should everyone get a trophy? Won’t that teach a kid to expect a reward for everything they do? As a company in the Awards and Recognition industry, we have our opinions, too. You would think it would be and absolute “YES, Everyone needs a trophy!” (More business for us!), but you would be wrong. For younger kids, it is great. Many leagues and associations no longer automatically give out participation awards to older kids and I am fine with that.
As a mom of 3 boys, our family has received our share of participation trophies and other awards through the years. I have so many memories and pictures of our boys getting participation awards and it still brings a smile to my face to go back in time to see their joy. Everyone loves recognition – even adults!
Participation awards are great for younger kids (any age ups to about 3rd/4th grade). Why? Mainly due to the fact that at the younger ages, the child is learning basic skills, how to be a member of a group or team working together, as well as learning the rules and expectations. Every practice and game is a huge learning experience for them. Participation is the main method to improve and is really the ultimate goal at this level. Recognition of the participation, teamwork and learning is what is really being rewarded. By the time the child is in 3rd grade or older, the basic skills and rules have been learned. The child is now fine-tuning their skills for a new goal – that of being the best they can be. Rewards for this level should be for improvement of personal skills and for a team working towards the goal of achievement, not just participation.
“What type of award is appropriate for participation?” Is a great question. Kids like awards they can touch, display, and show to their friends and family. This would include a medal, trophy or resin award. It doesn’t have to be large or tall – they will love whatever they receive. Most sports and activities have stock designs available so there is no need to break the bank to get an appropriate award for participation. Adding personalization to include their name, team or event name and a date will make it even more special to them. Keep it simple – awards size should grow the their age, skill level and achievement.
